Chicago Suburb of Glencoe, Ill., to Host
National Championships of Cycling in 2010
In its 24th year, iconic cycling event moves from longtime home in
Downer's Grove, Ill., and becomes single day event.
GLENCOE, IL--February 2010--The USA Cycling Professional Criterium Championship is moving to a new location in 2010: Glencoe, Ill. -- an affluent northern Chicago suburb on the shores of Lake Michigan. The date is Saturday, August 14, 2010.
Glencoe is approximately 15 miles north of downtown Chicago and 26 miles from the iconic event's home for the last 23 years in Downers Grove, Ill. This new location is accustomed to bike racing and has been home to the Glencoe Grand Prix for the past three years.
Special Events Management, which has produced the event in Downers Grove since 1987, is coordinating with the local organizers to bring a whole new level or professional bike racing to Glencoe.
The race's move to Glencoe is the result of Downers Grove opting out for budgetary constraints affecting many municipalities nationwide in the current economic climate. In addition, this year's event will be held on one instead of two days.
The 24th annual USA Cycling Professional Criterium Championship in Glencoe will feature a new course. The showcase event, the 100K USA Cycling Professional Criterium Championship, will be sponsored by AT&T. This race features the awarding of the prestigious "Stars & Stripes" jersey to the top American winner.
There will also be races for women and elite riders.
USA Cycling, Inc., the sanctioning body for professional cycling in the U.S., will again be working with Special Events Management.
"We appreciate what Special Events Management has done over the years to develop the Criterium Championship," said Sean Petty, USA Cycling chief operating officer. "We also appreciate how AT&T and the Village of Glencoe have come in to provide support to continue this race in the area of its historic roots."
A criterium is a popular type of bike race in the U.S. that takes place in a closed-circuit loop.
The AT&T USA Cycling Professional Criterium Championship is part of the USA Cycling Professional Tour, a men's-only, season-long calendar comprised of national championship events that determines the best professional rider and team on American soil. It is also one of 17 national championship events that USA Cycling sanctions across five disciplines in the sport for amateurs and professionals.
